An Episode in Dating: 4 Boys And a Beach House

December 29th, 2010

The Beach House

Situated right on Silver Lake with views of the Atlantic, the beach house in Rehoboth was a quaint Cap Cod with a master suite, two bedrooms, screened porch and a huge yard perfect for volleyball or playing catch. From the plush furniture, to the pantry stocked with organic lemonade and a dozen different bottles of vodka, everything about the house softly cooed, “relax.”

Matt and I were sprawled on the sofa reading the Rehoboth Beach Film Festival guide when Jarrod walked in wheeling a massive suitcase.

“Jarrod, why’d you bring so much stuff? We’re only here for a weekend” I said as I got up to give him a hug.

“Yeah, I know. I pack like a girl. Hi. I’m Jarrod. You must be Matt, the other tall one among us.”

Matt came over to greet Jarrod. “Hi. You must be Jarrod, the other smart one among us.” They both smiled and hugged each other.

“Hey!” I played it up like I was insulted but I was actually very happy that Matt and Jarrod had clicked with each other. While my friends don’t have the ultimate say on who I date, it is important to know that the two groups can get along. “So where’s Tyler?”

“Here I am!” chirped Tyler as he walked towards us from outside into the living room. Tyler came up to us, hugged Matt, hugged me, and hugged Jarrod while giving him a long soulful kiss. Then he proceeded to take off around the house giving himself a tour while he took pictures, texted friends and tweeted on his iPhone 4.

“Wow,” I said. “After that flurry of activity I think I need a drink. Everyone okay with vodka something or other?” I handed out cocktails while everyone made themselves comfortable and looked at the schedule of movies showing that weekend. Jarrod and Matt kept up their banter the whole time and their conversation eventually shifted to politics.

“I wasn’t a fan of Hillary during the elections but I think she’s doing a great job as Secretary” said Matt.

“I was actually for Hillary during the primaries” said Jarrod.

“You and probably half the gay men in DC” I piped in.

Tyler looked up from his phone with a quizzical look. “Hillary? Wait, what TV show are we talking about?”

I snorted a good portion of my drink while Matt howled with laughter. Tyler realized he was a little off in his assumption of the conversation and went back to his phone.

Jarrod switched places on the couch he shared with Tyler and tickled him. “Sweetie, what movie are you interested in seeing tonight?”

Zombies of Mass Destruction” Tyler yelled in between laughter.

“Okay” I said, “That one sounds like a winner.”

Tyler had turned the tables on Jarrod and was now tickling him. Matt and I continued sipping our drinks and were now lying with each other on the opposite couch.

To be continued…
