Happy Friday!  It’s no secret that we’re fans of Idris, which is why we were pleasantly shocked to see him out with a new single called Private Garden.  Oh my, that man is pretty to look at.

If you like the sound of Idris, you can download his album High Class Problems Vol. 1 under his stage name Driis.  Enjoy!

Dating Soundtrack: Good Luck by Basement Jaxx and Metrople Orkest

August 9th, 2011 1 comment

The latest Basement Jaxx effort has taken some of their hit songs and arranged them to full on orchestration with the Dutch Metropole Orkest. The album is out now and includes the song Good Luck.

Good Luck is an anthem for anyone who’s been in a relationship with a jerk and gotten over it to the point that Alanis Morissette’s You Oughta Know just couldn’t reach. It’s like, you don’t want to be there to remind the bastard, you just want him gone.

Enjoy the song with Lisa Kekaula and the Metropole Orkest for yourself. The original version of the song with the music video where Lisa plays a prison guard who locks up her ex is after the jump.

Dating Soundtrack: Stand by Lenny Kravitz

July 28th, 2011 1 comment

Lenny Kravitz is back with a new album and single called Stand. Who wouldn’t want Lenny singing in their bedroom while they’re getting ready for a date? The video for Stand is cool too, with Lenny playing many different roles and doing a bit of fun gender-bending. His new album Black and White America is available for pre-order from Amazon, and Stand is available for download now.

Amy Winehouse: The diva that represented a part of us.

July 25th, 2011 1 comment

Amy Winehouse had a voice that spoke to me the moment I heard it. I was living in the midwest at the time Rehab came out, and I remember a friend talking about “the rehab song” that they kept playing in the clubs on the weekend. I went home and downloaded the album Back to Black and became immediately hooked.

Back to Black is a beautifully crafted album, and I could go on about it’s arrangements and borrowing from the Motown style. But what caught me about the whole thing was this woman with a deep, soulful voice, singing about modern love and relationships in a way that said, “I’ve been there too.” It wasn’t just the lyrics themselves, but it was the way she sang it with her voice that let you know she’d been there and back, and sometimes there and back again.

After listening to her album, I decided that I had to see this chick perform live. Read more…

Dating Soundtrack: Love Makes Things Happen by Pebbles and Babyface

June 16th, 2011 Comments off

Doing a new post tomorrow in honor of Fathers Day but in the meantime check out Love Makes Things Happen by Pebbles and Babyface.

The video is a tad unrealistic but still cute, so just go with it.  Besides, the best part of this song is the “ya never ever ever ever know, oh oooo oh oooo” at the end.  TTFN.

Dating Soundtrack: Hold On by Wilson Phillips

May 31st, 2011 Comments off

Yeah, I saw Bridesmaids this weekend and it totally reminded me how much I loved this cheesy song way back when.  I think it had to do with being in high school and not entirely sure that I was gay, yet still having that innate gay longing for fierce female divas.

There isn’t much I can say about the deepness of this song.  I never looked at it as a dating song per se, but one that you sing out loud by yourself while getting ready for a cheesy night out with friends, or that you sing out loud with friends while getting drunk during a cheesy night out. Dating Soundtrack: If That’s Your Boyfriend by Meshell Ndegeocello

April 27th, 2011 2 comments

If That’s Your Boyfriend was my jam in the ’90s. A strong black woman playing a bass with an unbelievable sound and ground-breaking style, Plantation Lullabies is an amazing album from whence this track and many other great songs came from.

But I’m not putting up Meshell solely based on her talent. I’m including this song as a Dating Soundtrack because it states a plain fact that many gay men don’t want to admit to or talk about: at some point in our dating lives we’ve hooked up with someone else’s man and didn’t regret it.

Dating Soundtrack: Motivation by Kelly Rowland

April 5th, 2011 Comments off

The official video for Kelly Rowland’s new single Motivation came out today, and to call the video “smokin” would be an understatement.  Think Kylie Minogue’s All the Lovers video times 10.

Motivation is overt without being explicit, and that’s exactly how we like it.  By the way, I think I’ve seen some of those dancers at Mansion parties in LA.

The single is available via Amazon on April 12th.

Dating Soundtrack: Girlfriend by Pebbles

March 30th, 2011 2 comments

I know.  It’s not the new Britney Spears single but it’s my blog and I’m gonna play DJ the way I want.

Pebbles for you youngins was big in the 80’s with her hit singles Girlfriend and Mercedes Boy.  She’s also famous for being the founder and manager of the group TLC.

I’ve always loved this song for the rap, although the actual lyrics are really good in explaining why you need to get rid of that low-down dog of a man, girlfriend.  This video is amazing.  I counted at least 5 different hairstyles for Pebbles and the proliferation of the S Curl look is hilarious.

Pebbles is now a minister (I wonder if her and Vanity talk?) and you can visit her website here.
